Gathering and looking through my family's papers, there have been some interesting finds such as a professionally typeset list of passengers from the Holland-America Line ship that brought my grandparents and mother to the United States. This list is different than what typical "passenger lists" look like. It's a half-fold booklet that alphabetically lists all the people who have booked passage on the ship. This particular booklet is for the S.S. Volendam, departing Rotterdam, The Netherlands on Tuesday, August 8, 1950, stopping to pick up additional passengers at Le Havre, France, and arriving at its destination, New York. The official Passenger/US Customs List on Ancestry.com verifies that the ship arrived in NYC on August 19, 1950. My grandmother told us that it was foggy when "the boat" entered New York harbor, but suddenly, the fog cleared, and she saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time. What an inspirational sight that must have been!
